Suspended particulates are also a major air pollution source and are due in large part to the burning of fossil fuels for transportation purposes (Shakman, 1985, p. 7). Particulate pollution has also been implicated in the incidence of bronchus and lung cancer. A third environmental factor which was implicated was oxidant air pollution. Oxidant, in this instance, refers to oxides of nitrogen, which are emitted into the air through automobile tailpipes and factory smokestacks (Council on Environmental Quality, 1982, p. 82).
