Erikson's Crisis 1: Basic Trust versus Basic Mistrust (Birth to 12-18 months)

This stage, if successfully negotiated, leads an infant to the notion that the world is a good place where people and things can be relied upon. If trust predominates, children develop what Erikson calls the virtue of hope or the belief that their needs will be met and their wishes can be attained.

If mistrust dominates, children will see the world as unfriendly and unpredictable; overwhelmed by disappointment, they will have trouble developing close relationships. Trust or mistrust is said to be established during the feed situation which is characterized as an opportunity for interaction between mother and the infant.
