Depression is not the result of a physical disease or of drug abuse (the latter being designated as Substance-Induced Mood Disorder). Major Depressive Disorder is marked by lengthy episodes, sometimes a single episode, with an episode "considered to have ended when the full criteria for the Major Depressive Disorder have not been met for at least two consecutive months" (DSM, 1994, 339).
