Mother Theresa was trotted onto the world stage to proclaim that hunger was caused by the forces of evil, and the Reagan Administration identified the forces of evil as Marxist devils, proclaiming that hunger in Ethiopia was the fault of the socialist political and eco nomic policies of that country's leftist government.
The intent of some of these efforts was laudable; of others pathetic; of yet others laughable; and of some down right sinister. Nowhere were the governments of the western industrialized countries found offering the massive amounts of aid required to preclude massive starvation. Many private efforts were relatively ineffective (the US$80 million raised by the Live Aid Concert would not even begin to address the 3hunger problems in Ethiopia much less those in the rest of Africa. Nowhere were the giant and powerful agribusiness multinationals found sacrificing profits to prevent starvation. The agribusiness giants, at least, were quiet.
