A PROPOSAL FOR THE CONDUCT OF HEALTH EDUCATION

PROGRAM FOR WOMEN IN RURAL NIGERIA, WITH A VIEWTOWARD IMPROVING BOTH MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH

This proposal describes a program to provide health educational services for women in rural Nigeria. The purpose of the health education program will be to facilitate improvements in the level of maternal and child health in rural Nigeria. A request is made in this proposal for program funding at the level of US$60,000 for the first year of program operation.

The goals and objectives of the proposed health education program for women in rural Nigeria are both shortterm and longterm in character. The shortterm objectives are as follows:

1. To educate the women of rural Nigeria with respect to the diseases to which they and their children are most susceptible.

2. To educate the women of rural Nigeria with respect to the environmental conditions and sanitary practices which are the most significant contributors to the incidence of the diseases to which they and their children are most susceptible.

3. To educate the women of rural Nigeria with respect to the actions which they can take to preclude the incidence of the diseases to which they and their children are most susceptible.

4. To educate the women of rural Nigeria with respect to the actions which they can take to supplement available treatments for the diseases to which they and their children are most susceptible, when incidences of such diseases

Problems associated with access to health care services will likely worsen significantly, before beginning to improve. The delivery of health education services to women in rural Nigeria, therefore, holds the potential to address some of the unmet public health needs in rural Nigeria, by preparing women to provide family and selfcare, in an effort to improve the level of maternal and child health in rural Nigeria.
