The review of literature presented an examination and discussion of relevant articles, books, and other publications in seven areas of the home schooling literature. This summary covers each of the seven areas discussed and cites the most relevant publications.

Area 1: Historical Aspects of Home Schooling

Tobak, T. & Zirkel, P.A. (1982). Home instruction: An analysis of the statutes and case law. University of Dayton Law Review, 8, 13-14.

These publications made the point that, historically, home schooling was viewed as a right of the American public.

Whitehead, J.W. & Bird, W.R. (1984). Home education and constitutional liberties: The Rutherford Institute Report, Vol. 2 Westchester, ILL: Crossway Books.

This publication listed several key cases in early American history and beyond which upheld home schooling as a constitutional and parental right.

Area 2: Reasons Why Parents Choose To Home School

The foregoing publications provided documentation as to the various negative reasons (e.g., parents dissatisfied and disillusioned with public school system) and positive reasons (e.g., can shape children's values) that parents elected to home school their children.
