Integrated Marriages

Integrated marriage is certainly not a new phenomenon in America. From the outset, English colonists married and mated with native Americans and Blacks. As the slave holding society of the Old South developed, matings and children of mixed racial heritage became common. After the Civil War, as Blacks began their slow fight for integration into American society, a rise in the number of mixed marriages occurred. Sociologists comments that although the rate declined during the Depression, after World War II the rate once again rose. As well, since the emancipatory decade of the 1960s, interracial marriages are more common and less hidden aspects of contemporary American society (Larsson, 1965; Buttery, 1987).

The principle theory applied to interracial marriages is that of a marital choice. This holds that individuals are drawn together by similarities in character, education, social status, religion, and other variables.
