STS analysis is primarily concerned with the introduction of new technologies into an organization. Within this context, a compatibility between the new technical subsystem and the existing social system is sought. Such compatibility is attained through a combination of "selecting new technologies which are most compatible with the existing social system, and changing the social system to accommodate the new technology" (Shani, Grant, Krishnan, and Thompson, 1992, p. 93). Simultaneously, the relationship between the new technology and the organization's environmental subsystem is redefined through an adjustment to the organization's overall business strategy (Shani, Grant, Krishnan, and Thompson, 1992, p. 93). The STS approach encourages a holistic perspective oriented towards an organization's longterm goals and objectives (Tonges, 1992, pp. 2732). In far too many instances of the introduction of new technologies into organizations since 1980, the nontechnical ramifications associated with the implementation of such technologies has been either overlooked or underestimated (Larsen, O'Driscoll, and Humphries, 1991, pp. 419427).
