Most people in the United States are quite prepared to decry political impingements on economic efficiency on a conceptual level. When such impingements touch individual citizens, however, such criticism not only disappears, it most frequently is redirected at the proponent of economic efficiency. That situation is clearly evident in this case. The closing of post offices, delivery schedule changes, and personnel reductions are always controversial issues, and such issues are almost invariably addressed through political solutions, and not on the basis of economic efficiency. University economists might not like the way the real world works; however, they are not likely to make much headway in reform until they recognize the way society works, and work within that system for reform.
