Subjects  Subjects for the study were 27 seventh graders from a local junior high school who were participating in an introductory band class. The class breakdown is summarized as follows: 12 males (44%) and 15 females (56%); the students were further delineated by age: two 11 year olds (7%), nineteen 12 year olds (70%), and six 13 year olds (23%). Prior to the study, the teacher was asked to rank these students according to their musical ability as poor, average, or excellent. Of the 27, her ranking showed five students as poor (19%), 14 students as average (52%), and eight students as excellent (30%).
