In the same vein, there are at least seven basic assumptions about the way nonverbal communication is studied that are clear issues in each level of nonverbal behavior research. These issues include: 1) The nature of the specific communication function determined the nonverbal behaviors to be observed. For instance, there may be irrelevant nonverbal codes given in any particular situation (e.g. the color of a piece of clothing would give little clue to the truthfulness of a statement) (Burgoon, et.al., 1989); 2) Every function in nonverbal behavior has its own particular situational characteristics. In other words, each social context may have its own particular nonverbal functions that are expected (Stiff, et.al., 1989).
