There are a number of scholarly studies within the literature that address the size and age relationships of the family in relation to the potential risk of family breakdown. Some of the research cited in scholarly material suggests that as the family size increases, so does the potential for discord. There is also research that points to the fact that the effects of young children on family disharmony may be exacerbated directly in relationship to the age and maturity level of the parents. This same research suggests that the effects on the children themselves may be just as severe as the children's presence might be on the family (Ferguson, et.al., 1990).
