ill and colleagues (1992) stated that:
Continuity can be viewed as being supported or obstructed through public policies [e.g. retirement mandates], individual health,a nd other factors that facilitate or limit economic and other options related to work or retirement. (p.102)
Those factors providing continuity were said to be specific to the individual (subjective). In other words, for some older adults post-retirement employment is viewed as offering continuity, while for others it is not viewed in this way. Because of the subjective nature of post-retirement employment (as characterized by continuity theory), Toughill and associates asserted that a good method for exploring the validity of the theory was through a survey of seniors' perceptions
