My least favorite advertisement is the television advertisement for Budwiser Dry beer which shows two young men waiting for an elevator who are suddenly transported to some tropical isle by the very though of drinking Budwiser Dry beer. Of course, the island paradise is populated only by young women, who have absolutely nothing on their minds other than pleasing these two gods from the United States.
There are many reasons why I dislike this particular advertisement. First, it is degrading to women. The implication of the advertising content is that women have absolutely nothing to do in the world, other than be around to please men, when men want them. This advertisement implies that women, particularly young women have no thoughts, goals, or desires of their own. Second, the Budwiser advertisement is degrading to men. It implies than men, particularly young men, have no social objectives other than having as much unencumbered sexual intercourse as is possible. It further implies that, in addition to having no social agenda of their own, men, particularly young men, have no regard form women, particularly young women, as individuals who might have things to do other than please men. Third, by continuing to promote sexual inuendo as a means of selling beer, Budwiser negatively affects all responsible
efforts to control the AIDS epidemic. I suppose, however, that Budwiser greed assumes that the supply of idiotic young men will last at least through the lifetime of those now in charge at Budwiser, so that they can continue to profit off of the brainless. Fourth, by promoting the sale of beer to the age/ gender group with the highest automobile vehicle accident rate, and by far the highest automobile accident rate where alcohol is involved, Budwiser's advertisement continues to exhibit the company's disregard for social values.
