This same attitude prevailed among AngloSaxon Protestants with respect to societal development within the United States, because they were "sure of their means and ends, of their chosenness and call under God" (Marty, 1986, p. 24). Racism in earlyday America was not subtle.

Race, although it provided a convenient basis for discrimination by the AngloSaxon majority in the earlyyears of American development, also served a positive role for black people(Marty, 1986). Racially based neighborhoods and social institutions, such as religious congregations, provided protective "cocoons" for black people in the United States (Marty, 1986, p. 94). Race "marked the identity and social location of nonwhites" in the United States (Marty, 1986, p. 150). As an example, the AngloSaxon majority in the United States largely through the midtwentieth century, tended to "perceive blacks as blacks, not as Baptists or Methodists" (Marty, 1986,
