Besides the need for getting my thoughts across to co-workers and students, there are other important reasons for effective communication: "Essentially, what gives leaders great personal and professional impact is the ability to communicate effectively their ideas, their dreams, and concerns to those who can do something about them." (4). If the notion smacks of typical business pragmatism and, possibly, unworthy of personal utility, I think it's important to remember how communication is defined, "the exchange of thoughts, messages or the like . . ."
A business speech is intended to fulfill one of the following objectives: to inform, to motivate, to inspire, or to entertain. All speeches need not, however, as in the case of a business speech, be as effective; that is, strikingly impressive, producing a desired outcome, and calling to service or action. Considering these attributes, I recall no speech I have given that has been effective without delivery. Delivery is, in my opinion, in addition to content, among the most important components of a business speech, and deserves my further concentration and development. In other words, I have found there is a parallel between delivering a personal message to peers and delivering a business speech.
