It is argued that the only way we can have a neutral and thus equal society is by eliminating these preferences, and yet if we do so, we will be left with the asymmetry that has long prevailed. We can state that we now have a neutral society, but statistics in the three realms cited above do not show this at all. Women still are underrepresented in the workplace, as are members of various minority groups. The white power structure has been talking as if the problem were solved and indeed as it there had been a shift so that now reverse discrimination was more than a whining phrase by individuals affected by minority set-asides and similar programs to redress past imbalances. In truth, the imbalances remain and will not go away because we declare victory.
