Programs for Coaching Education

The purpose of this study was to examine two alternative programs for coaching educationthe United States Sports Academy National Coaching Certification Program, and the American Coaching Effectiveness Program National Network, with a view towards the development of a recommended prerequisite education program in coaching required of candidates for interscholastic coaching certification. It was hypothesized that the American Coaching Effectiveness Program is the superior prerequisite coaching education program for candidates for athletic coaching certification at the interscholastic level.

Based upon the results of the statistical analyses, the research hypothesis was accepted. Although the American Coaching Effectiveness Program was found to be superior to the United States Sports Academy program, the differences in quality between the two programs were clearly small. It was concluded that an educational program leading to the certification of athletic coaches is warranted. It was also concluded that either of the alternative programs considered in this study would be acceptable for the purpose of educational certification. It is recommended that the certification of athletic coaches be pursued.
