This view is no longer widely accepted, but many psychologists still think that there is some intrinsic but not readily apparent meaning in dreams. However, others argue that dream are essentially meaningless, and that they most likely serve some neurobiological function.

I tend to support the latter hypothesis, for a variety of reasons. First, it seems to me that if dreams had some important unconscious meaning, we would 1) be likely to remember more of our dreams, and 2) be able to decipher them ourselves. However, this is not the case. Lahey states that we dream an average of four to six times every night, but that many people never remember any of their dreams, apart from the occasional nightmare. Similarly, most people would be likely to tell you that dreaming of a train signifies a journey of some sort, not a phallus as Freud would argue.
