According to Pinkston-McKee (1990), student activities programs are used by colleges and universities to assist students with their academic and social adjustment to college life and, thereby, to retain them as students. Pinkston-McKee reports that retention is an important factor in the planning, design, and implementation of student activities programs because the consequences of attrition are financial losses for both the colleges and for the students themselves in terms of their future earnings potential.
