Similarly, the contemporary industrial and manufacturing organization is an integrated entity which can no longer afford to entrust its decision making to professional managers. Rather, such organizations require leadership from individuals possessing both technological and managerial competencies.
One of the most demanding of the many tasks that an engineering manager may be called upon to perform is the efficient and effective management of a major project. This type of project management requires an engineering manger to demonstrate both technological and managerial competencies. Within this context, it becomes imperative for the engineering manager to fully understand and be capable of applying sophisticated project scheduling and monitoring functions.
Project management fundamentals are similar, regardless of the particular branch of engineering that may be involved. The purpose of the proposed research study will be to examine construction project management (CPM) as a vehicle for the development of an understanding of the principles of engineering project management and the applications of the concept.
Some technical terms will be used in the presentation of the study findings. These terms will be defined in the proposed thesis where used and in the context of those uses. No terms of broad, general applicability that may be unfamiliar to the general reader will be used in the proposed study.
