ically motivated force of reconstruction designed to save the white race and establish a new order. In fact, his 1906 novel, The Clansman, An Historical Romance of the Ku Klux Klan soon became a theatrical production, playing to supportive North Carolina crowds.6

In 1979, however, the Klan entered into quite a different facet of North Carolina politics. As previously mentioned, on November 3, 1979, four people were killed, ostensibly for their antiKlan feelings. Those killed were members of the Communist Workers Party of the United States, and initially believed that the killings were the result of FBI collusion with the Klan.7

On November 5, 1979, Greensboro District Attorney Michael Schlosser indicted fourteen Klansmen, saying that he had cause to believe that they "did lawfully, willfully, and feloniously, with malice aforethought, kill and slay and murder James Waller, William E. Sampson, Cesar Vicente Cauce, and Sandra Smith."8
