THE PHENOMENON OF BODY BUILDING

ner, in keeping with the idealist perspective. Body building, as a part of human physical development in ancient Greece, therefore, was viewed as a means of human selffulfillment.

The dominant underlying philosophical belief held by ancient Greeks in relation to the teacher was, again, idealism. Thus, in ancient Greece, the commitment to an idealistic beliefsystem was consistent. The teacher, within the context of this beliefsystem, assisted learners to attain selffulfillment. One aspect of individual selffulfillment was the human physical development of the individual, of which a part of such development was body building. Human physical development programs in ancient Greece were developed as an integral part of other educational programs, the goals of which were to permit individuals to attain selfrealization and selffulfillment. In this context, human physical development programs were not an end in themselves, but, rather, a facet of an overall education and development program. The concept of human physical development in ancient Greece differs from some modern human physical development

concepts, wherein some aspects of human physical development are often viewed as ends in themselves. In the United States it has been found that eclecticism characterizes the underlying philosophical belief structure in relation to human physical development, with strong pragmatic tendencies present in the overall eclectic character of the underlying philosophical beliefs. Eclecticism is the method or system of choosing or selecting material from various systems, doctrines or sources. The eclectic synthesizes a point of view by taking those elements considered to be the best or most useful of those schools of thought that appear to be relevant to current needs. The eclectics are not bound by any one school of thought, but, rather, seek to profit by reference to many.
