d more and more people began to find themselves willing to leave their pasts behind and start a new life as a soldier in the Salvation Army. The newly military of the movement continued to grow, ensuring that the group would not for long be contained by England's shores. By the time of Booth's death in 1912 the army was at work in 58 countries.

With the change in the organization's name, a number of quasi-military structures were added to the group. Military terms became standard: Church halls became corps; giving in the offering was called ôfiring a cartridgeö. Flags, badges, brass bands and uniforms were added along with the military-rank style system for the staff. Years of service, position and responsibility in the organization were demarcated by trimmings on the uniform. A standard uniform of blue serge was introduced in 1880 for both men and women. Men wore a high neck tunic with a stiff collar over a scarlet jersey. Their headgear was a military cap with a red band on which were worked the words ôSalvation Armyö in gold thread.
