In a very real sense, the idea of "Electra" is as much the subconscious desires toward madness as it is a representation of the role of pragmatism in society. Sophocles accomplishes this duality by presenting a morbid idea (murder) beginning with a joyful scene in which nature is cheerful and ends with the Chorus congratulating Orestes "crowned with good by this day's enterprise."3
