The development of environmental awareness is a part of the broader process of educating a society, whether that society be national or international in character. Occurrences such as the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska and environmental damage resulting from the conduct of the Gulf War may easily be viewed in a narrow context that focuses only on ecological consequences. Spreading the knowledge of such events and their consequences to the general public, however, serves a broader educational purpose.
