Computer System Implementation

This is an excerpt from the paper...

The implementation of a computer system in the business environment can greatly improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization. This is true not only in terms of greater efficiency and productivity, but also when it comes to generating new levels of organizational integration. Therefore, successful implementation of computer systems in the business environment is critical for reaping these goals. At all times the system must be one that provides scalability, expandability, and integratability for optimal long-term success. Such elements incorporated into system development achieve what Mead (et al. 2000) label “survivability”, (2).

Proper staff development must be carried out in order for technology that is implemented to be used effectively to produce the expected outcomes. According to McDaniel and Umekubo (1997), there are four vital steps to implementing technology effectively: staff development, internet access, technical support and educational programs (18). Once again, the authors suggest the most effective implementation technique will be one that occurs in phases designed to introduce technology changes. People issues remain the most focused on ones in the literature. The Gartner Group recommends that in the planning phase of a technology implementation project, 40% of total costs should be allocated to people issues (Averett, 2001, 34). Many organizations allocate a tremendous amount of resources to analyzing and refining technology strategies, but they often fail to pay enough attention to how best to execute those strategies. If management fails to adequately communicate technology strategies and anticipated results or if they underestimate their impact on the organization
