Organized Crime

This is an excerpt from the paper...

The nature of organized crime makes it a very difficult kind of crime to control. This is largely because organized crime and those who control it run their organization through coercion in a clandestine manner. Through bribes, extortion, threats, infiltration with commerce, banking and politics, and violence, those who control organized crime are often able to conceal their illegal activities or legitimize them through the control of the economy and political environment. Organized crime is often hard to detect because it employs methods and tactics that are carried out through supposedly legitimate concerns, such as banks, corporations and casinos. It also typically involves an international scope and flavor, as did the situation in the Bahamas and the one in modern day Russia, “The Bahamas evolved into an offshore have for tax evaders and money laundered in a very short period of time. The process included receptive public officials, international entrepreneurs and American racketeers entering into formal and informal relationships designed to serve their respective financial positions” (Kelly 335). If we look at organized criminal activity in the United States in the modern day, we can see the influence of organized crime despite many denials of its existence. One area this phenomena is apparent is in the banking and casino
