Third, utterance structure is controlled by the interaction of a specific number of phrasal, semantic and pragmatic limitations. Fourth, topic-focus structure and semantic scope affect where the learner places adverbials and negation. Fifth, the beginning stages of second language acquisition are based on definable, universal principles, while any factors that could be specific to a source language (SL) or target language (TL) show up in later stages of development.
