Animated computer graphics have come a long way in development since their original uses in toys like Atari and Nintendo video games. While the existence of animated computer graphics has not been a long one, it has been one, like most computer technologies, that has witnessed sophisticated and rapid advances in areas from specific features and capabilities to diversity of application. Today there are many applications which utilize animated computer graphics, from sophisticated technologies in the health care industry to phenomenal applications in filmmaking, as witnessed in the movie Toy Story.

The rapid development of today’s sophisticated animated computer graphics is not hard to recognize when looking at the simplicity and lack of capabilities of earlier uses in the infancy of animated computer graphics. In a video game like “Pong” or “PACMAN” the graphics were simple (black and white in the case of “Pong”), one-dimensional, and of poor resolution and locomotion ability (as in the case of “PACMAN”).

By these standards of animated computer graphics in their early development, one can see how advanced technology in this area has become in less than two decades. There are so many uses for animated computer graphics today, and so many different capabilities and potential uses for them, that it is hard to find a field that does not utilize them in some capacity. The whole reason for using animated computer graphics is because it allows people to operate or understand the virtual world of computers in the same manner they understand and operate in the real world. We navigate on the computer much as we do in real life when animated computer graphics lead us down hallways or through corridors to get to where we want to go.
