The provocation for the war had been constant attacks by Arab terrorists on Israeli farms and villages from high above the Golan Heights. Syria continued the attacks with more frequency as Nasser talked of the annihilation of the State of Israel. In the three years between 1965-67, Israel suffered a total of 113 attacks on its land and people (Bard 2). After Syria attacked Israeli kibbutzim in the Golan Heights, a retaliatory attack by Israel was launched in April of 1967, during which Israeli planed shot down a half dozen Syrian MiGs. The Soviet Union had been backing Syria and Egypt with arms and economic assistance and alerted officials in Damascus that Israel was gearing up for a major strike. Egyptian and Syrian forces surrounding the borders of Israeli in May, shortly before Nasser ordered the UN Emergency Force out of the Sinai. In what U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson labeled the casus belli for the war, on May 22, Egypt erected a blockade of the Straits of Tiran. Israel was left cut loose from its trade routes with Asia and was cut off from its Iran supply of oil.
