The other laurel of Chamberlain’s military career transpired on the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg, when Chamberlain and is his men were called into action in Pennsylvania at a location known as Little Round Top. The 20th Maine was one of the divisions under the command of Colonel Strong Vincent’s 3rd Brigade. Chamberlain’s men were put into position at the far left of the line at Little Round Top. By this time Chamberlain had been “appointed Colonel of his regiment” (General, 1). Confederate troops led by General John Bell Hood advanced up the rocky and bolder-laced hillside to try and claim Little Round Top and cripple the Union line. When the conflict was over, the Union would count among its 130 dead a number of officers including Vincent but the victory of Union forces had been secured.
