Borderline Personality Disorder

ked to such a personality paradigm. Where biology is concerned, temperamental abnormalities, impulsivity and emotional stability, associated with BPD are thought to be traits engendered in the individual via heredity. While there is no direct evidence that brain chemistry is a direct causal element of the BPD puzzle, there are studies that link low serotonin absorption and the trait of characteristic of impulsivity prevalent in individuals with BPD (Paris, 1994; Paris, 1993; Paris, 1996). Personality is distinct among individuals, but among psychiatrists personality is typed into thirteen categories, such as aggressive, mercurial, adventurous, etc. Disorders arise when there is a maladaptive behavior pattern within the individual that is a result of reacting to the eternal environment from too rigid a personality perspective. For instance, the mercurial personality type who is unable to be flexible outside of that behavioral pattern is vulnerable or predispositioned to develop BPD, while the rigid adventurous personality is vulnerable to developing antisocial personality disorder, and the rigid aggressive personality is vulnerable to sadistic personality disorder. Similarly, the rigid mercurial personality may be vulnerable to biological markers not found in other disorders to a similar degree. Still Paris (1994) suggests that in spite of these predispositions, the biological markers that engendered personality traits associated with each type are not significant enough to cause the development of a personality disorder in and of themselves, a theory encompassed in the neo-Kraepolinian model:

The model predicts that each psychiatric disorder should be validated by the presence of biological markers that reflect a specific vulnerability….The biological factors in the personality disorders may be reflected in underlying temperamental factors. Temperament is a major influence on the development of personality traits. These tr...
