More than 1400 people are killed annual in the workplace, a fact that costs employers approximately $35 billion annually in legal costs, lost profits, and negative publicity. Workplace violence is the leading cause of death for women in the workplace and the second leading cause of death for men. Despite these statistics, many organizations have failed to adopt a sound workplace violence security policy. Such policy involves a security plan that includes written policies, physical security measures, employee training, and a workplace violence crisis plan that includes post-incident management. This research explores the growing phenomenon of workplace violence in American workplaces. The goal of the research is to demonstrate to employers the need for a sound workplace violence security plan to protect employees, customers and themselves. There are numerous cases which support this condition that permeates workplace violence literature as a central theme. In addition to the staggering costs associated with workplace violence the human resource toll it takes is overwhelming for many coworkers and even organizations themselves. Some workplaces that have experienced mass killings have closed altogether. Of those that remained, many lost employees while those that did stay suffered psychological anguish and feared for their safety. Failure to create a safe and secure environment in the workplace can also lead to liability from OSHA and state mandates. So, too, reports the ATLA, employees may file civil suit against employers due to failure to maintain effective security measures. According to Sakis (et al., 2002), “Several exceptions to the exclusive-remedy doctrine allow injured workers and the survivors of deceased employees to pursue premises liability lawsuits for negligent and/or inadequate security” (32).
