More than 1400 people are killed annual in the workplace, a fact that costs employers approximately $35 billion annually in legal costs, lost profits, and negative publicity. Workplace violence is the leading cause of death for women in the workplace and the second leading cause of death for men. Despite these statistics, many organizations have failed to adopt a sound workplace violence security policy. Such policy involves a security plan that includes written policies, physical security measures, employee training, and a workplace violence crisis plan that includes post-incident management. This research explores the growing phenomenon of workplace violence in American workplaces. The goal of the research is to demonstrate to employers the need for a sound workplace violence security plan to protect employees, customers and themselves. A situational analysis describes the problem and research focus. The premise underlying the research is then given, including problem statements and definitions of key concepts used in the research. A review of literature discusses the phenomenon of workplace violence and addresses the components of an effective workplace violence security plan. A summary of the results of the literature review and a conclusion are then presented. Based on the literature review, recommendations are made for areas of future research. Recommendations are then made for security managers.
