Delphi formerly worshipped Mother Earth, or Ge, from the 14th to the 11th century BC (The Oracle 1). However, from the 11th to 9th century BC “The worship of Apollo became established at Delphi and in the following centuries ancient Delphi took shape with the construction of a temple to Apollo and Athena, a theater and a sports stadium” (The Oracle 1). We can see how influential the Oracle at Delphi Apollo was to Greek culture when we read Sophocles’ version of Oedipus, the king of Thebes who discovers upon seeking advice from the Delphi oracle that he has inadvertently killed his father, married his mother, and is himself responsible for the myriad woes that are plaguing Thebes.
