3 Federal Agencies Involved in Ecommerce Fraud

The following government agencies all maintain Web sites that can be used to access information related to efforts at combating ecommerce fraud, including access to legislation and legal cases pertaining to it.

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)

Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FCEN)

U.S. Postal Inspection Service (PIS)

U.S. Bureau of National Affairs (BNA)

Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)

National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C)

The Web sites of these federal agencies provide a variety of sources of information pertaining to ecommerce fraud both with respect to legal issues and law and law enforcement efforts aimed at combating it. For example, from the FTC Web site, users can access http://Econsumer.gov, a cross-border site maintained by the FTC to register ecommerce complaints. The FTC also provides a database called Ecommerce and the Internet. This database offers a variety of useful pamphlets available as either text or PDF files that cover a number of issues pertaining to ecommerce fraud including rules and acts, cases, consumer education and other information.

The BNA publishes periodic reports on legal developments concerned ecommerce in its Electronic Commerce & Law Report, available at:

From the FBI or NW3C Web site, users are able to access the Internet Fraud Complaint Center (IFCC) – a partnership between the FBI and NW3C.
