As management and development behavior has evolved and grown over the past thirty years, so too have career planning and management planning. This is because of an increased awareness that the most effective and common type of development occurs in the work environment. What this has done is make development a continuous on-going process that has evolved new methods of training more suitable for hands-on development, “Most management development takes place on the job and that planned job experience and career planning play an essential role in the process. This in turn has led in many cases to a much greater involvement by line managers in the development of their own subordinates by means of coaching or mentoring and considerable numbers of managers have been trained in the skills involved in the mentor role, such as the assessment of strengths and weaknesses affecting individuals’ performance, the diagnosis of training needs and counseling,” (Sisson, 1989: 230).
