Future of Religion

n Toffler predicts a future that is based much more on individualism that nationalism. This is not only true for individual beliefs, like a chosen religion, but it is also true on a national level, like communism. We have seen social systems collapse over the past two decades as formally powerful individual nations suffered the forces of change as the world of nations became a global marketplace. No longer was it productive to adopt separatist policies. Free trade and tolerance of diversity became global watch words. As Toffler comments, the information age has allowed the masses to fragment into smaller groups who share similar beliefs, instead of one mass group able to be led collectively by the nose from one spiritual belief, “Today, instead of masses of people all receiving the same messages, smaller de-massified groups receive and send large amounts of their own imagery to one another. As the entire society shifts toward Third Wave diversity, the new media reflect and accelerate the process,” (181). It is easy to imagine the ability to communicate with individuals around the globe may allow for the development of many fragmented groups who share similar beliefs among their members. In other words, a return to polytheism may be just as likely as any continued growth in a mass-oriented, separatist belief system like Christianity.
