Shielded from the perpetual threat of inevitable death, humans could proceed with their daily routines of procuring their more ‘earthly’ needs” (Alper 106). This is where Alper is wrong. He assumes we are more consciously strong/aware now than we were in the past. He offers no proof of this though and it sounds more like the ego at work affecting his perspective that now, because he is alive, is more significant than the thinking of the past.

Thus, instead of this need being innately programmed in us because we are connected to some higher being or power, Alper feels the need was biologically invested in us through the process of evolution and natural selection by a nature that ensures itself through all its kingdoms. Alp
