In the U.S. and around the world the number of newspapers available online has increased rapidly and dramatically over the past decade in large measure as an attempt to overcome these challenging trends. In March 1995, there were only seven newspapers in the U.S. that offered electronic versions to consumers via the Internet. As of 2000, more than 2500 newspapers across the U.S. had established Web sites with continuously updated information available online (2500 1). While the future of electronic versions of newspapers is unknown, the following statistics demonstrate that pervasive extent of Internet penetration by print media:
