Human Ecology

This is an excerpt from the paper...

The following research attempts to resolve the environmental impact of recent enormous increases in the numbers of residential Canada geese residing in Virginia, specifically the Newport News region. The population of geese has grown exponentially during the last decade, creating an impact on the region in terms of environment, economy and culture. Included in the research is an opening problem statement that discusses why a resolution is mandated by the current situation in this Virginia region. The body of the research discusses the history of residential Canada geese in Virginia, including environmental impact and efforts at managing geese populations. After presenting this body of research, a formal Integrated Pest Management (IMP) plan is offered, including plan provisions, time-frame, costs, and benefits from implementing the plan to the environment, economy and culture of the region. A conclusion then offers a summary of the research and justification for why such a plan as the one offered is merited. An appendix is then provided, followed by a list of the various sources used in the research.

od banks across the state (Managing 9). Despite these benefits to the habitat, people and the economy of Virginia, the enormous increase of residential Canadian geese is creating problems in all three areas. Geese cause economic damage because they can ruin agricultural crops, golf course lawns, residential lawns, ornamental plants and gardens. They also trample vegetation as they feed and travel in groups. This denudes the landscape from a process known as hard pan that prohibits the growth of vegetation and depletes other species of wildlife that depend on it. Geese are also a major threat to airplanes and their passengers and crews. More than 200 geese-related plane accidents are reported annually and in some cases geese have been blamed for crashes involving as many as 24 fatalities (Managing 4). Bill Miller reports that Virginia officials must regularly roundup geese at locations such as Reagan National and Dulles International airports (B02). Geese in Virginia have also become a public health and safety risks in many places. The old expression “like shit through a goose” may be unpleasant to the ear, but it is even more unpleasant to deal with the enormous volume of fecal matter produced by large flocks of Canadian
