Internet & Politics

This is an excerpt from the paper...

The Internet has greatly revolutionized American politics as it has so many other institutions in American society. Perhaps the biggest impact from use of the Internet in American politics is its ability to give individuals from all socioeconomic classes and backgrounds the opportunity to participate in public policy and political campaigns. The Internet has also revolutionized the way policymakers solicit support for various issues and the way they package and sell their campaign platforms. So, too, the Internet has had a significant impact on fundraising, grassroots movements, and political advertising. It has also impacted the structure of American politics, shifting the traditional paradigm of top-down, centralized organization to bottom-up decentralized organization. The organization was formed to wage a Web-based petition drive urging Congress to censure President Clinton and then “move on” (Cochran 2003, 2424). Since that time the organization has galvanized grassroots movements on a variety of issues and for a number of purposes. It was the June, 2003; virtual primary conducted by MoveOn that enabled Howard Dean to establish himself by winning 44% of the vote, (Cochran 2003, 2424). The group maintains a base of 1.7 million names in the U.S. and is not organized around a particular industry or common economic interest like tr
