However, estrangement and a deteriorating society that paralyzes the individual remain the main theme of Ulysses. Joyce uses a naturalistic style I enjoy in achieving an overall theme of disillusionment. Using a style that is as revealing as a motion picture camera, Joyce captures every nuance of detail all recorded in a dispassionate and scientific manner. The physicality of experience is recorded in every detail, showing its place of significance in our daily existence. Bloom is highly visual and reflects continuously on these visual perceptions. In the novel Joyce basically perfects the interior monologue and we are afforded a chance of delving far into the psyche of his characters. With Bloom, we see how much he derives pleasure from visual stimuli “To catch up and walk behind her if she went slowly, behind her moving hams. Pleasant to see first thing in the morning” (Joyce 171-73). However, as in reality, he also reflects upon visual perceptions that are not to his pleasing “Her stockings are loose over her ankles.
