than other women, unless they are also intravenous drug users” (Bastow 1). Statistics actually show that prostitutes who are not IV drug users are not the deadly vectors of HIV/AIDS transmission the public readily perceives them to be. In fact, they are the ones who are more at risk of contracting HIV/AIDS from males who force them to have unsafe sex and because they cannot report crimes against them. Prostitutes generally use condoms more often than other women and they are at low risk for spreading HIV/AIDS to males because of the nature of the sexual activity that occurs with most street prostitutes (performing fellatio or engaging in sexual intercourse). Studies in Canada even demonstrate that a series of males who use the services of prostitutes have no reported incidence of HIV/AIDS, “Studies show that in their sexual relations, sex-trade workers use condoms more consistently than other populations similar in age, race and sex. Further, with respect to female hookers, the fact that the transmission of HIV from female to male is so difficult would suggest that the sex trade is unlikely to be a source of the spread of HIV/AIDS. Early studies of men who use female prostitutes confirm this; they did not reveal a single case in which the client was infected by a prostitute” (Bastow 1).

Where male prostitutes are concerned the situation seems to be the reverse of female prostitutes. Male prostitutes are more often willing to engage in riskier sexual activities than female prostitutes, including ones that are more prone to the transmission of HIV/AIDS. Research also demonstrates conclusion evidence that male prostitutes are much more likely to carry the HIV/AIDS virus. One limiting factor of the research is that not as much research has been done on male prostitutes and HIV/AIDS seroprevalence as it has on female prostitutes, but the statistics available are alarming, “Rates as high as 50 percent and as low as 11 p...
