apitalism. Thus, the U.S. craftily used the United Nations as a way of progressing with its initial Cold War policies by enacting an undeclared war on North Korea. In actuality, the causes of the Korean War had been building for roughly a period of three years time. In 1947, the U.S. went before the U.N. to solve the problem of the strong communist build up in North Korea and the instability of the weak democracy in South Korea. While Korea may have been the playing ground of the issue, the players were the U.S. and the Soviets who did try to solve the dilemma through the U.N. before conflict arose, “The Soviet Union suggested that both sides should withdraw from Korea, leaving the people there free to choose their own government, democratic or communist. The Americans did not accept this proposal. The Communist north was more heavily armed than the Democratic south, and would have easily trampled over them, thereby spreading Communism to another part of the world. American surrender in this fashion was unthinkable. They submitted this problem to the United Nations General Assembly” (Laite 1).

The first actions taken by the U.N. was to form a commission which would monitor free and secret elections in Korea. The commission was also aimed at getting the occupied forces to withdraw from the country. Since the Soviets would not allow the U.N. into North Korea the elections had to be held in parts of the country to which they had access. Elections occurred in 1948 and the U.N. General Assembly recognized the Korean government and established another body to oversee the withdrawal of occupied forces. Not to be left out, the
