Both Citizen Kane and A Clockwork Orange are technical marvels. Citizen Kane was responsible for prefiguring many modern uses of the camera, lighting and angles. In particular, it is cited for the use of deep-focus photography where everything in frame is in focus. This technique is used at many points in the film, including two which retain emotional as well as visual impact from its employ. The first is in the beginning of the film when we see Charles Kane’s parents inside his boyhood home deciding the future of their son, who we see in focus through a long shot outside the window. It emotionally moves us because the destiny of the young man is being decided by his parents as he innocently plays outside. The other scene comes later when Kane has overextended himself financially. After he signs the papers of his renunciation, deep focus is used to show a window on a wall behind Kane. As he beings to move toward the window it rises in height and grows in size until he seems a diminutive figure beneath it. However, as he begins to walk toward the camera his size grows. This gives the psychological impression that Kane always looms large from his own perspective, despite the perspective of those around him.
