During the thirties, Stalin unleashed one of the most brutal campaigns known as the Great Terror. Khrushchev was active in the forced collectivization and political purges of this regime that were bloody efforts by Stalin to consolidate his power. During WW II Khrushchev was near the front lines, personally witnessing the rout of the Red Army by the Germans. After the war Khrushchev served as one of Stalin’s top advisers in Moscow until his death in 1953.
