In fact, King, Jr. often admonished against spending more on means to destroy society than on the means to unite and build it, “…a nation which spends more money on military defense than on social programs is moving toward spiritual bankruptcy. Ultimately there will be a world-wide fellowship based on unconditional love” (Beck 8).

The views of Socrates are similar to King, Jr. where the relationship of the individual to society is concerned. Both men viewed society as being an organized collection of individuals, who, for the sake of civilization agree to give up some of their personal will or freedoms for the good of the collective whole. In other words, the laws of the state supercede the desires of the individual when those laws are just.
