Patients with Medicaid and Medicare are covered even if they are not poor or over 65 if they have end-stage renal failure, meaning they require dialysis or a kidney transplant. A recent study conducted on 9,102 patients with Medicaid and Medicare found that only 31.4% of all Medicaid-only dialysis patients were placed on kidney transplant waiting lists compared to 45.5% of the eligible Medicare population (Medicaid 1). Such discrepancies are unconscionable and point to the inadequacies in these state and federally managed care programs.

With respect to the three main forms of managed care in the U.S., all three also come with limitations. Many complain about the lack of coverage, the lack of physician choice, and rising health care costs including the price of prescription drugs which continue to skyrocket.
