. It cannot be denied upon a close reading of the two women that there is some similarity between what Margery of Kempe writes and the advice we are given by Julian of Norwich:

Julian tells Margery to follow the urgings of her soul as long as they are not against the worship of God and profit of her fellow Christians. For the Holy Ghost moveth ne’er a thing against charity, for if He did, He would be contrary to His own self for He is all charity. She counsels against doubt: He that is ever doubting is like the flood of the sea which is moved and born about with the wind, and recommends steadfast faith in the fact that the Holy Ghost dwells in the soul. She claims that God and the devil are ever at odds and reassures Margery that the devil hath no power in a man’s soul. Twice she mentions scripture: Saint Paul saith that the Holy Ghost asketh for us with mourning and weeping unspeakable, and Holy Writ saith that the soul of a rightful man is the seat of God.
